Tripper to host 10th Anniversary Show – Friday, April 24, 2009 at the Magic Bag in Ferndale, Mich.
03/18/09

It’s been 10 years of writing, practicing, recording three releases, and playing stages big and small, near and far. We’ve made many friends along the way and will now bring everyone back together right where it all started - in Ferndale, Michigan. Tripper returns to the Magic Bag on April 24, 2009 to play it’s 10th Anniversary show, with special guests JTX and Just Off Turner. Doors will open at 8:00 p.m.; 18 and over welcome; tickets are $7 at the door.

While the band formed officially during the Gentle Friday show at Central Michigan University on April 30, 1999, initial practices and songwriting began at a modest Ferndale bungalow. It was here that Tripper worked to become fan favorites with solid songs and a solid, highly energetic live show. It’s fitting that a Ferndale return marks this fun-filled decade. We’ve been everywhere, from places like Joe Louis Arena, DTE Energy Music Theatre, Meadowbrook Music Festival, Ford Field, The Shelter, to little-known, now defunct clubs in Cincinnati, Ohio and Marquette, Mich.

Some interesting Tripper facts:

  • Tripper songs have been downloaded more than 40,000 times
  • The band appeared on compilations in Atlanta, New York, and Melbourne, Australia.
  • Tripper songs have aired on 89X, 93.1, 96.3WDVD, 101WRIF, XM Radio, and more than 100 other radio stations throughout the United States and in Germany.
  • “Tripper” is a slang term in German for a sexually transmitted disease, yet the band is actually named for Jack Tripper of Three’s Company fame.
  • Tripper lost out to the Killers, and ultimately Lifehouse to be the soundtrack for the Dodge advertising campaign during 2007.
  • Tripper may be the only band in history to have played two clubs called The Trolley Stop in two different states (Taylor, Mich./ Dayton, Ohio) on two consecutive days.
  • Tripper has opened for the Gin Blossoms (twice), Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers (twice), Blues Traveler, Seven Mary Three, Greenwheel, Foghat, and Foreigner.
  • The laundromat on the cover of 2002’s Yesterday, Friday & Today CD is now closed. The powdery substance on the back of the CD is, in fact, laundry detergent.
  • The drive in on the cover of 2005’s Perfect Plot Line is the Ford-Wyoming Drive In in Dearborn, Mich. It’s still open. The back cover photo was shot in Eastern Market in Detroit. It’s still open too, and is great on weekends.
  • Jason Dinkelmann, who handles web design for the band initially introduced the two founding members Frank Buscemi and Steve Marvicsin. We don’t know whether to blame him or thank him.
  • Detroit Red Wings play-by-play announcer Ken Daniels once shared the stage with Tripper on his birthday.
  • Tripper has performed in front of the following mascots: Roary (Detroit Lions), Louie the Laker (GVSU), Belle Tire, Ronald McDonald, Paws (Detroit Tigers), Big Boy, Mongo Man, Blues Clues and a giant purple hippo.
  • Tripper’s first official show was an acoustic performance by Buscemi and Marvicsin at the No Exit Café in Chicago. The first official Detroit show was at Memphis Smoke, in Royal Oak, Mich.
  • Tripper was signed to Triton Records (Los Angeles) when it first formed. They’re closed.
  • Ken Thomas, Buscemi and Marvicsin did the field goal challenge during halftime of the Detroit Lions / Carolina Panthers Game during the 2005 season. Thomas made both kicks from 25 and 40 yards to win an R.W. McQuarters autographed ball. Last season, the prize for the same result was a trip to Jamaica.
  • Approximately 95% of the bands Tripper has performed with are no longer bands.

It’s been a wild ride, we’ve made a lot of friends along the way, and we look forward to continuing it with a great show on April 24. Thanks for your support and friendship for all these years. We hope to see you there!
